Sofa Size Calculator
Use your available wall width and preferred side clearance to find a practical maximum sofa width and a nearby common sofa size.
Always verify doorways, staircases and delivery access before ordering a sofa.
Leave breathing room around the sofa
A sofa usually looks more intentional when it does not fill the wall edge to edge. Side clearance also helps with side tables, lamps and circulation.

What the sofa size calculator checks
The calculator starts with the wall width available for the sofa and subtracts the side clearance you want on both ends. That gives a practical maximum sofa width. It also compares room depth with the clear space you want in front, helping you judge whether a very deep sofa will crowd the room even if its width fits perfectly.
This is a planning tool, not a furniture specification. Actual sofas vary in arm thickness, seat depth, back angle and overall projection. Use the result to narrow your shopping range, then compare the exact product dimensions with the room and delivery route.
Measure the usable wall, not just the wall length
A long wall may include a doorway, radiator, floor vent, built-in cabinet, switch or required walkway. Measure only the portion that can genuinely be occupied by the sofa. If one side opens into a circulation route, protect that route rather than measuring through it.
In an open-plan room, define the living zone before measuring. A sofa that technically fits the architectural wall can still project too far into the dining or kitchen area. Painter's tape on the floor is one of the best ways to visualize the real footprint.
Why side clearance helps a sofa look intentional
A sofa placed tightly from wall to wall can make a room feel packed, even when the furniture technically fits. Leaving some breathing room creates space for side tables, lamps, curtains and easy cleaning. It also makes the sofa read as a chosen piece rather than something squeezed into the only possible gap.
The ideal clearance depends on the room. A small apartment may use narrow gaps, while a larger living room can support generous side space. The calculator lets you test both approaches and see how much sofa width remains.
Sofa depth can be more important than width
Shoppers often focus on sofa width because it is the headline dimension, but depth determines how far the furniture projects into the room. Deep lounge sofas can be extremely comfortable in large spaces yet overwhelming in narrow rooms. Overall depth includes the back and cushions, not just the seat depth.
Compare sofa depth with the clear floor space needed for a coffee table and walking route. If the room is shallow, a sofa with a compact overall depth may feel better even if the wall could accommodate a wider model.
Seat depth and comfort are personal
Overall depth is a room-planning dimension; seat depth is a comfort dimension. Tall people or people who like to curl up may enjoy a deep seat. Shorter people may prefer a shallower seat that allows their feet to rest comfortably on the floor with back support.
Two sofas with the same overall depth can feel very different depending on cushion thickness and back angle. If possible, sit on the sofa before buying or compare seat depth, seat height and cushion construction carefully.
Sectionals need a footprint plan
An L-shaped sectional can fit the main wall while its chaise blocks a doorway or narrows circulation. For sectionals, measure both legs of the footprint and mark them on the floor. The current calculator is best for straight sofas, but its wall-width result is still useful for the main run.
Pay attention to left-facing and right-facing configurations. Product descriptions define orientation differently across retailers, so use the plan-view drawing rather than relying only on the words.
Delivery access is part of sofa sizing
A sofa can fit the room and still fail to reach it. Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway, stair turn, elevator door and ceiling pinch point along the delivery route. Check whether sofa legs can be removed and whether the piece can be rotated vertically.
Manufacturers sometimes provide a minimum access dimension or diagonal depth. If delivery is tight, modular sofas or models with removable arms can reduce risk. Do this check before ordering, not when the delivery truck arrives.
Worked example
Suppose the available wall is 320 centimeters wide and you want 25 centimeters of clearance on each side. The maximum sofa width becomes 270 centimeters. If the room depth is 400 centimeters and you want 90 centimeters of clear space in front, a very deep sofa may still work, but you should also reserve room for the coffee table and any circulation route.
A 250-centimeter sofa would leave about 35 centimeters on each side of the wall in this example, giving more flexibility for a side table or floor lamp. The calculator's maximum is a boundary, not necessarily the ideal target.
Common sofa-sizing mistakes
- Measuring the whole wall instead of the usable furniture zone.
- Ignoring overall depth in a narrow room.
- Choosing by seat count without checking actual width.
- Forgetting side tables, lamps and curtain stack-back.
- Planning the room but not the delivery path.
- Buying a sectional without confirming chaise orientation.
Sofa size calculator FAQs
How much space should I leave beside a sofa?
There is no fixed rule. Leave enough for circulation and any side furniture, then use the calculator to see the resulting maximum width.
Is a three-seat sofa always the same size?
No. Seat-count labels vary widely. Always compare the listed overall dimensions.
How do I know if a sofa is too deep?
Mark the full footprint on the floor and check the remaining space for the coffee table, walking routes and other furniture.
